Betsy

Do you know if its okay to put melamine in the microwave?

Mindful Momma

Good question Betsy. No, melamine is not microwave-safe. It will melt!

It is dishwasher safe though, and as far as plastics go, it is one of the safer ones to use. It is said to be non-toxic and will not leach any chemicals into your food.

Thanks!

Another colorful option is pyrex. They have a ton of great vintage pieces in bright primary colors on Ebay.

Can you return the dishes to Zak for recycling when they get old, wqorn and/or broken? I found a company called Recycline that makes a tableware line called "Preserve" - plastic dishes, bowls and tumblers from recycled plastics. They also offer prepaid postage to return worn broken products for recycling.

Good question Janet - I don't think Zak takes back old melamine for recycling but it would be a great idea. Recycline is a great company! They make toothbrushes and razors out of recycled plastic as well.
