Ever wondered how it is that a scent can change your mood so suddenly? How a whiff of lavender can make you feel calm and relaxed, while a squirt of lemon or lime can brighten your spirits instantly? It's because our sense of smell is directly tied to our physical and emotional well-being.
Aromatherapy, the practice of using pure essential oils for therapeutic benefits is a perfect example of how powerful scent can be. Essential oils are the pure oils distilled from the flowers, leaves, roots, seeds and resins of plants and they are made up of many different natural chemical compounds. When you inhale an essential oil, it stimulates the olfactory system which then sends a signal to the limbic system in the brain - the part that controls emotions and memories - causing you to feel relaxed, focused, stimulated or whatever the properties are of the particular oil.
A great way to get started with essential oils is to use them in spray form (you should never put essential oils directly on the skin). RubyBlaise Essentials is a wonderful line of aromatherapy mists made with 100% pure essential oils mixed with distilled water to disperse the oils into a fine mist that is easy to inhale. The line is created by a holistic-minded Mother of twins and licensed massage therapist, who wants to share the healing powers of aromatherapy with more people in the world. She makes 12 blends, each with its own therapeutic properties and unique scent. I had the pleasure of trying a few of them:
Citrus Mist - An uplifting blend of grapefruit, tangerine, lime, lemon, litsea cubeba (from the evergreen family), lemongrass and vanilla.
Happy Mist - A blend of bergamot and grapefruit that makes you feel surprisingly....happy!
Stress Free Mist - Say bye-bye to stress with this blend of clary sage, lemon and lavender.
Cleansing Mist - An "anti-everything" blend made with eucalyptus, bergamot, peppermint & tea tree.
Hippie Mist - A groovy blend of myrtle, lavender, lemon, cedarwood & patchouli.
Interested in trying RubyBlaise Essentials mists? Now's the time because you can get free shipping on your order through the end of July.
By the way - if you'd like to learn more about aromatherapy, I recommend The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood. It's like the bible of aromatherapy. Seriously. It has all the information you will ever need plus essential oil recipes for every ailment under the sun.
{Full disclosure: I received free samples of 5 RubyBlaise Essentials aromatherapy mists. Also - If you do happen to purchase the book mentioned through the link on this post, I'll get a few cents back from Amazon Associates. :) thanks!}

A surprising use for essential oils, which I recently came across: for a sore throat or earache, take one drop of oregano oil, mixed with sugar or jam (anything sweet because it's *super* bitter) and then swallow, letting it coat the throat. It hurts like a mother, but you can actually feel it working on the affected areas. CAUTION: do *not* place in ear; swallow the dose for an earache, too. Also, disclosure: I'm not a doctor. Just someone who tries to treat sore throat and ear aches with healthy and holistic treatments. But this remedy helps me and my family!
Best,
Elizabeth
