I had a bit of an anxiety attack last night while shopping at Target. This is really unlike me - I'm a pretty mellow person. I suppose for some people, just walking through the doors there might throw them into a state - but I was child-free and looking forward to some time by myself to shop.
What threw me was when realized that my hyper-vigilant concern over plastics is starting to drive me nuts! I started looking at some plastic drinkware, thinking that we could use some new grown-up glasses to carry around outside in the summer. They had a bunch of really cute styles and I was thinking about buying some when I picked up the glass and read "Made with unbreakable POLYCARBONATE PLASTIC" on the label! This is the very plastic used in the sippy cups and Nalgene bottles that I have written about in the past - the one with potential health risks. And they are using it as a selling point on the glasses at Target! My anxiety level took a hike as I left the aisle empty-handed.
Then I thought about getting some fun pool toys for the boys. I looked at the plastic rings that kids love to use in the pool. But were they made from poisonous PVC vinyl???? The label didn't say. I quickly walked away as my blood pressure rose.
Was I being a freak? Or a sensible Mom? Honestly, I'm not sure. I pride myself on being level-headed about these things but last night I thought I was going over the edge a bit. Any thoughts?
Whenever my kids ask for those movie themed sports bottles and sippy cups made of plastic I always have to explain why they can't have them. Sometimes people overhear my explanation and look at me like a freak. Oh well. ;) When I am old and grey I won't be sorry I tried to protect my kids...even if I looked a silly doing it.

I had a similar anxiety attack in the grocery store trying to remember what I was or wasn't supposed to buy! I know how you feel. Those cups are adorable, btw. It would have been hard to resist buying them.

Sigh,
It's tough being vigilant! Depending on the day, I do end up buying some of the nasty stuff...but not for anything that goes near my DS's mouth.
